WTF!

Luckily no one was hurt, but yes, the ceiling did fall like this. It got a large crack in it in the weeks before, so, you know, if you have a big-ass crack in your ceiling, you may want to sleep on the couch.

holy shit is right!
In a twisted way, I'm so glad this has happened to someone else... the ceiling in my parents' house fell when I was very little. We had gone out to dinner with neighbors and when we got back, the living room ceiling was on the floor!

Sorry for your grandparents, though

Holy shit indeed! Did this happen in June by chance? So much bad stuff has happened to me and my friends and family this June (and Junes in previous years) that next June I'm hibernating! Glad your grandparents are OK.

This happened to my house... twice.
I no longer trust lath and plaster

Swift_Griffon, July 7th, 2011, 9:53 am

Wait... How's that even... possible?

THIS SHIT HAPPENS!!! Happened to me in my house about a month after we moved in. Dad was installing the dishwasher, and there's this huge THUD and Adi (or dog) comes running like, "I didn't do it!" Went upstairs and saw that the weight of the plaster had pulled the nails out of the rafters. Also, from the weight of the vermiculite they had added in the 70's. Vermiculite, BTW, has asbestos in it. :( But the cool thing is, we were able to loft the room to the attic and it's wicked cool now. :)

My dad's old house is built into the side of a hill: a manufactured home that sits atop a stick-built garage and a big downstairs room. One winter, while he was out fishing, the water heater developed a leak, and since my stepmother was too lazy to call a plumber, she just put buckets in the corner under the leak downstairs. Finally, the ceiling gave way while my brother was headed down to empty the buckets, and the whole corner of that room just came crashing down right in front of him. It was bad. haha
